Modern Greece: Decadence Unbound by Napoleon Linardatos,

Αν είναι να κρίνουμε, ας αποδώσουμε τις ευθύνες εκεί όπου αντιστοιχούν. Για παράδειγμα, το μεγαλοϊδεατικό όραμα του 2004 που υποστήριξε το μεγαλύτερο μέρος της οικονομικής και πολιτικής ελίτ, βοήθησε τελικά την Ελλάδα ή την εγκλώβισε στα ίδια και χειρότερα, εξυπηρετώντας το άμεσο συμφέρον κάποιων διαπλεκομένων του πολιτικο-οικονομικού συστήματος; Ο "μέσος" Έλληνας ευθύνεται για τον μικρόπνοο σχεδιασμό;

I would like to respond but your article is deliberately vague and incoherent. There are issues of course that are complex and difficult but this in no way means that you unnecessarily obscure the language. Perhaps, behind such a move lurks the fear that nothing is there to be said except the repetition of some old, worn out slogans.

If I were you I wouldn’t worry about the imposition of any aristocratic values (although I am afraid that you meant to say bourgeois.) The modern Greek, whatever his socioeconomic status, has fully embraced what I termed in the article as the relativism of the everyday life.

For instance, what infuriates the average Greek about the recent scandals that captured the headlines is not the corruption per se, but the lack of democratic participation in it.

Talking about the USA I would say that the welfare spending is too high and it should be reduced further. Europe should follow that example.
Concerning the “descendants of slaves” that are “stacked in prisons” I list to you the two causes: the breakdown of the family and the welfare state. When bourgeois values are abandoned there are consequences. By the way, you’ll start having the same problems in Greece fairly soon with crime and anti-social, self destructive behavior.

If Derrida or Foucault could see modern Greece they would marvel and appreciate what has been accomplished the last 40 years: the breakdown of all standards and the triumph of personal whim over the common good.

Agapite Napoleon,
thank you for answering my comment on miranda-p.blogspot.com

My intention was not to be vague, but neither did I wish to miss out the wider framework.

I used the term "aristocratic" because I was referring to the noble antecedent of "philosophical ethics"; not specifically to bourgeois moralism.
These relate to different anthropological strata /eras.

Obviously, some system of values is always in the heart of an organized society. But, these evolve and vary with time.

It's obvious that Greece (among other countries) is facing an unprecedented challenge. I don't know how often you visit this country, but you must have seen how deep the changes are (big new money, a dynamic banking sector, the black economy of war and illegal trade in the balkans, massive immigration and cheap, unsecured labour; we are faced with a bankrupt political caste, a failing state, a government party whose contribution, after all, is to show how shallow traditional stereotypes are! we also have an unprecedented number of local movements, organizations of citizens, art activism and pressure groups. These things do not often make the news! They may often be excessive or misguided, but they prove that a new political consciousness is being elaborated. I myself have been working in certain projects, like this one: www.reconstruction.gr)

To me, the work of Foucault and later, Derrida, and many others, is an important part of western post-modernity. Bear in mind, that I am a disciple of Foucault and this, has never made me irresponsible, or irrational. These thinkers have certainly nothing to do with corruption in hellenic politics! No philosophy can ever induce corruption or harm society, because all systematic thought teaches responsibility, liberty and the struggle for coherence and meaning.

On the other hand, I wanted to point out that certain problems that in your vision appear symptomatic of modern Greece, cannot be fully disassociated from European and world politics.

I do agree with you that we need to tackle problems on the local level effectively, efficiently, you name it... but, there is an issue with the historical evolution of society. Don't forget that Greece, after the civil war, was a broken society. Before catching our breath, we fell apart once more and... enter the generals. Pasok played a role in rehabilitating a class of people that had been persecuted, but, eventually they stayed too long in office and thus, became corrupt, in tune with a "large part" of our society that saw European subsidies as some sort of spoil.

But, let us not overlook that other part of greek society, all the responsible and gentle citizens who really care.

I can't help thinking that you care about your country of origin. So do I, but at times I hate it too. Don't we all? I comfort myself by thinking that it takes time for institutions to be built, it takes time for societies to produce efficient elite classes, it takes time and effort and luck! and still...

Best regards
M

M,
I don’t try to be a burden to you but I feel obliged to respond. I’ll try to be as brief as possible. (By the way, is M something like Kafka’s K?)

To me, the work of Foucault and later, Derrida, and many others, is an important part of western post-modernity. Bear in mind, that I am a disciple of Foucault and this, has never made me irresponsible, or irrational.

I agree. It doesn’t make you irrational but someone could say that if you take them seriously there ceases to be a justification for being rational.

No philosophy can ever induce corruption or harm society, because all systematic thought teaches responsibility, liberty and the struggle for coherence and meaning.

How about communism? A system of thought primarily concerned with production and the means of production which at the end couldn’t produce anything.

In the article I made the point that as social cohesion became a political obsession and countless laws and policies were implemented on its name, the bonds between individuals were weakened.

No society will ever say steal and lie. But there are socioeconomic systems where it pays to do so. You only have to compare Greece with say Germany to see how individuals treat each other and how they treat what is considered public.

I agree with you that before PASOK there was a disadvantaged Greece, the other Greece as we may say. The mistake they made in the 1980s though was that they thought that this system of patronage if it became widespread would be less corrupt and somehow economically sustainable.

Today I just took a quick glance (I’ll go back to check it this weekend) at the reconstruction.gr. Your effort is commendable. The first and most obvious sign of a society’s health is how people treat the public space. It is there I believe that our cultural poverty becomes so evident.

PS.: In college I majored in economics but I also took a minor in philosophy. It was my reading of Derrida and Foucault that partially moved me to the right; the understanding of how man-made is our environment and what radical consequences man’s perception can have in the world. It is this awareness of man’s precarious place in history and in society that in my opinion obliges someone to also give a ‘vote’ to the dead people.

Hi NL,
No burden at all, on the contrary, I appreciate your taking the trouble to answer.

M. in my case is not symbolic, just a way to strike a balance between anonymity/privacy on the net and personalizing the signature. There is an ongoing debate about these issues, even in Greece recently, with reference to blogging.

About "a justification to be rational", I guess, I can only say that "reason" is part of our intellectual makeup; we are lost without it and unfortunately, it is an endangered tradition. Endangered by the irrational media, mass phenomena etc

There is certainly a paradox in Foucault's attempt to elicit the discourse of déraison, defined more or less as the silence of reason. Like there is a paradox in Plato's ideas. There is always a flaw in every attempt at totalisation. In post modernism, the Frankfurt school and more recent thinkers, we see a tendency to humanize philosophical discourse and accept/integrate its fragmented and multilayered character.

These are progressively "rhizomatic"/organic discourses.

What I retain from post-modernism and deconstruction, basically, is an attempt to reveal the fissures of dogmatic rationalism. These guys took philosophical analysis (and critique) to its limits, digging under the surface of structuralism and under the surface of structured language, something that had already been the object (in a much wider sense) of works of fiction like Ulysses.
Thomas Pynchon is another interesting example.

What I find offensive is the cult of sentimentalism, eg in the work of Paulo Coello, or in Harry Potter and other best sellers. Commercialism favors the absence of critique!

About communism: I would look at marxism as an interesting theory. On the other hand, the "soviet union"... I would have considered as an application of imperialism to marxism rather than the opposite. Russia today is not communist but certain methods remind the soviet union. Totalitarian idealism/ communism/ national socialism... are these not related?

About greek socialist governments "imposing social cohesion through countless laws and destroying free association", I think I agree with you. What we need is a limited number of very strict laws to regulate the bonding of individual interests. We should safeguard freedom and democracy too. Encouraging people's dependence on the state is totalitarian. Such are the socioeconomic systems where it pays to be corrupt.

I don't understand very well what you say about Pasok and their system of widespread patronage. In all cases, I don't think Simitis could have centrally controlled the political personnel and the regime mentality. They ended up behaving just like the old political right that had monopolized this country's wealth before Pasok. You know "our children will get the jobs etc"

I totally agree with you about public space. I worked with reconstruction.gr for a couple of years, saw the misery and the hope inherent in fringe politics and local associations, I saw the bureaucratic mentality and the lack of interest on the part of state and local institutions, the waste of funds, the difficulty and the satisfaction of coming to an understanding with fellow citizens on a basis of disinterested free association.
However, I am currently taking a break, because I felt a little bit tired/wasted/decentered and in need to resume a more personal body of work. Would this be my turn to make a move to the right to save my sanity from this vision of precariousness and the objective void under my feet? I don't know. I guess the dead do have a say in all we do. I tend to believe that most of our choices are chemically conditioned by our inherited genes and it takes all kinds of choices to have a working society. Health is a matter of measure and balance!
Sometimes, I think that if I could I would just move to Vancouver :-)

Έρχονται τώρα καθυστερημένα κάποιοι νοσταλγοί του μαζικού ροκ και της αυθεντίας... (οι λάτρεις του μπλε χαπιού) να μας πουλήσουν φούμαρα για μεταξωτές κορδέλλες. Nice old expression. Το ίδιο κάνουν και τα έμο υβρίδια, δεν λέω. Αρσενικό και θηλυκό, γιν γιαν. Nαι, ήθελα λοιπόν να πω, ότι it's OK, όποιος θέλει να πληρώσει για να χαζέψει τους περιφερόμενους με το τελευταίο χιτάκι, σιντάκι, ποντκαστάκι κλπ, ...it's OK, όποιος θέλει θα το κάνει και θα κατεβάσει και μερικές μπύρες και από κει και πέρα θα του αρέσει ότι κι αν κουδουνίζει μέσα στα αυτιά του, όπως γινόταν πάντα. Όμως, μη μας ζαλίζετε άλλο με το τελευταίο trend se agglikia glwssa... υπερθεματίζοντας αναίσχυντα! Γιατί εκεί που βρεθήκαμε ο κόσμος σήμερα... Τί αξίζει να ακούει κανείς;
Τί, πώς, πού...

Henryk Górecki, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan u know what I mean) ή μόνη/ος, με ένα καλό ζευγάρι ηχεία και να απολαμβάνει σύμμεικτα περιβάλλοντα, βιολογικών φρούτων με κρασί, πνοές φρέσκου αέρα, ησυχίας, ένα κίτρινο βιβλίο μέχρι να δύσει ο ήλιος και άμα λάχει, έναν υπνάκο, ακόμη και γιόγκα.
